Re-appropriating 90s rave culture - be it acid house or jungle - is quite on trend at the moment but one overlooked factor in amongst all the Amen break filled techno and VIP versions is the usage of heavily-sped up vocals. It's this technique that's central to the lead track on the second volume of Where Good Friends Meet from the Wet Play label. Never ones to take themselves seriously, there is nonetheless a serious level of production skill involved in taking a vocal, speeding it up and adding some acid lines and a boogie hook into the mix, so kudos to Metrodome for doing that on "The Way". If chipmunk style vocals aren't your thing, Wet Play stalwart Ste Spandex is on hand with the wonderfully named "Pardon My Length" which pounds away in a manner that feels like Ron Hardy terrorising The Hacienda. Big up Wet Play!
