Following Nail’s recent ‘A Block Trax’ release on Robsoul, the Nottingham-based producer returns to the label alongside Cass Roc, with their collaboration: The NG9 Project. The ‘Money Grip EP’ contains four tracks from the duo rooted in the underground sound of the UK’s East Midlands, kick-started back in the mid-nineties by seminal labels like DiY. The EP’s solid grooves are packed full to the brim with bumping beats and funk-filled basslines, alongside the occasional disco lick. There’s no messing around the edges, with all four tracks aimed squarely at people getting down on the floor. The NG9 Project have so far released music on Phil Asher’s RSTLSS TRX and Booker T’s Liquid Deep Recordings. What goes around comes around, so the saying goes, and for Nottingham’s Neil “Nail” Tolliday, 2013 has been the year for come arounds. Whilst this side of the millennium was spent chiefly on Bent, his eight-year partnership with Simon Mills that headlined festivals and was a huge commercial success, prior that he was simply Nail, underground house producer and admired cult DJ working with DiY and Classic - origins that some twenty years later are being exposed anew. With a EPs coming thick and fast for Robsoul Recordings, AirDrop, Fear Of Flying and Shabby Doll, Nail Tolliday is fervently back, and more pertinent than ever. The NG9 Project also features fellow Nottingham dweller Cassius “Cass Roc” Campbell, a well-established producer who, since the late 1980’s, has been behind several projects including Krush. He was responsible for the commercial smash ‘House Arrest’ signed to Universal Music Group, which graced the UK’s most well known compilation series ‘Now: That’s What I Call Music’ and went on to sell 10 million copies worldwide. This latest collaboration with Nail looks similarly set to light up the underground and see The NG9 Project an underground music force to be reckoned with.
