Fela’s poetic use of broken English helped in resonating his message throughout Anglophone Africa. The lyrics of ‘Roforo Fight’ illustrate Fela’s frustration at intolerant, violent human behaviour by depicting a fight that breaks out in the streets in Lagos. ‘Go Slow’ is a 17:22 minute groove of first-generation funk featuring a rhythmic interplay so intrinsic to Fela’s Afrobeat. Lyrically, the song uses traffic jams in Lagos as a metaphor to critique the harmful social and environmental impact of urbanisation.
