The Manchester electronic music scene has long been defined by its' openness towards warm and soulful sounds. Contours, the production alias of percussionist turned producer Tom Burford, neatly fits this historic brief. Rich, toast and evocative, but with enough space in the mix for individual instruments and elements to shine, Technician is a quietly impressive debut. With Burford's loose, organic percussion to the fore, plus occasional saxophone, bass guitar and double bass, the EP's six tracks impressively meld elements from dreamy deep house, modern soul, West African rhythms, jazzy house, and hard-to-describe downtempo grooves. As a result, it's a comforting and hugely entertaining debut.
