As a child, Chuck Slay started humming melodies that he would hear in his head while walking to and from elementary school. Always expressing an interest in music while tinkering on his mothers living room piano, those melodies and lyrics soon became songs. Growing up in Ann Arbor Michigan presented an opportunity for music to be always nearby. Slay’s mother has always been a seasoned gospel musician for over 60 years and still plays Piano and organ weekly for a local church. Working with a Radio Shack DJ mixer while bouncing two cassette recorders gave him an early taste to learn how to record himself. Slay’s music gene soon fully manifested and he started playing synths and keys with local funk bands. These bands based their sound largely on the music style of 1999 era Prince, providing networking opportunities for him to polish his production skills. Slay began recording his own music in home studios and started developing his own melodic style. Slay developed a number of local artists, while accumulating an impressive song catalogue comprising of more than 1200 recorded songs. As a gifted songwriter, his catalogue includes a diverse range of music and accommodates a variety of genres. Later teaming up with childhood friend and Producer Anthony Larkin, the two formed Icehouse Productions. During the nineties, Icehouse discovered and developed a number of musical acts, and produced music for various labels including film and license opportunities. While creating and producing Rekonyze, an all male R&B vocal group, Slay’s music got the quint signed to the Quincy Jones blue chip label, Qwest Records. (Warner Bros) This experience provided an opportunity for Slay to hone his writing and production skills even further, working on an album with noted producers and songwriters Dwayne Wiggins (Tony Toni Tone), Ogi Pierce (Montell Jordan), Vassal Benford (Jade, Toni Braxton), Steve Russell (Troop) Troy Taylor (Johnny Gill / Trey Songs) and R&b Vocalist Carl Thomas. Never complacent, Slay decided to push the boundaries and commenced working on several rock albums in an attempt to further showcase his diversity as a songwriter and producer. Forever mindful of the motor-city pool of talent, the band “Coonn” was assembled. The band name and music created quite a buzz in the Detroit underground music scene, as they were entirely African American.. Still writing to hummed melodies, Slay has created a new song titled “All I Need is You” which is slated for Wax, Digital release and streaming on Neil Pounds UK based imprint Six Nine Records. The song features text book lead vocals by Joey Kibble of the famed Gospel Jazz vocal group Take 6 and the sultry background vocals of Chicago Vocalist Kelly Renee. The song conjures up vibes of post disco R&B, reminiscing the many great artists of that era.
