Contrary to the arguments of some, the myriad interpretations of electronic music don’t inhabit separate worlds. Such created compartments, strictly demarcated by style, time and genre, are anathema to the true music enthusiast. Rather these things co-exist as enduring components in a single, complex and interconnected sonic ecosystem. Sounds and ideas attract and repel, blurring and fusing, blending and merging, diverging and dissociating, sometimes by design, more often than not through serendipity. Every contact leaves a trace, and this is how musical magic happens. This debut vinyl release from dO it nOw Recordings offers audible proof of concept.
The sophisticated sounds cut into its four tracks occupy the very happiest of places on the matrix where deep house intersects with soul, funk, downtempo and jazz. The EP brings together rare underground talent in the form of electronic dance luminaries From P60 and Jaidene Veda. Each is a prolific and creative artist in their own right, but something very special happens when, as here, they share a groove.
Wisely assigned a portion of the plastic real estate alongside memorable and box fresh collaborations on This Sweet and Your Love, is Jaidene Veda’s Softly. Entrusted to From P60 for its original, deeply affecting form back in 2015, this laid back joint receives an atmospheric second pass from the talented Hungarian. His 2022 mix is a beautifully crafted contemporary reimagining of an already highly evocative tune. It’s impossible choose between the two interpretations. It’s also unnecessary, as this stunning EP thoughtfully includes both. On all four tunes, From P60’s sensitive, respectful and intelligently understated production creates an open framework within which Veda’s uniquely viscous, sultry and soulful vocals are free to weave, explore and entangle themselves at will. The result is effortlessly authentic. Many try, but few house music collaborations feel quite as unequivocally right for 2023 as those found on this exquisite piece of vinyl.
